Barefoot Shiatsu By Patrick McCarty
| Q
| How
did you start with Barefoot Shiatsu ?
A
|
I was interested in learning more about macrobiotics and enrolled in a program
where shiatsu was also taught. After seeing the ease and power of shiatsu
in helping to focus the body toward meaning change I was hooked. I took
every class that my teacher Shizuko Yamamoto taught and after a couple of years,
she asked me to help her write our first book,"Barefoot Shiatsu", that
was in 1974. |

Q
|
What is deferent's between Barefoot Shiatsu and shiatsu? |
| A
|
Barefoot Shiatsu (often referred
to Macrobiotic Shiatsu) is similar to all shiatsu in that we use the acupoints
and meridians of Traditional Chinese medicine. It differs in that we also use
our feet to press the larger parts of the body (legs, buttocks, back, etc.). Additionally,
Barefoot style always investigates the cause of trouble a person has. This is
discovered in their day to day life. So we talk about and adjust diet, exercise,
breathing, sleep, and relationships also. We try to treat the whole person not
just the problem |
| Q
| How
has Barefoot Shiatsu helped you?
A
|
Practicing Barefoot Shiatsu has
given me the opportunity to learn more about life and human nature. Unfortunately
many seriously ill people are drawn to this style because of the reputation that
it has. It is sometimes difficult to see so much suffering. On the positive side,
it has afforded marvelous opportunities to help people go beyond their current
conditions. And fortunately Barefoot Shiatsu combined with the Macrobiotic diet
consistently comes through when these people are at their lowest point. This process
of seeing the dramatic change from despair to hope is extremely uplifting. I see
it often so this makes me happy. It has helped me to appreciate the power of being
human and the strength of our spirit. |
| Q
| What
do you offer and specialise in?
A
|
I continue to have an active practice
in Florida and California. I teach several times a year mostly in the US (occasionally
still in Europe). The combination of Macrobiotics and Shiatsu is my specialty.
Shizuko Yamamoto and I have just finished our fifth book, "Macrobiotic Shiatsu
Workbook". And our newsletter, "Healthways" is in its 16th year.
