Sayonara Diabetes
- A Macrobiotic Approach to Type II Diabetes by Adam Newhouse - Mother
and Son's Victory over Diabetes through the Secrets of Old Japan ©The
Macrobiotic Guide - posted June 2005
Fourteen
years of 4 daily injections of insulin is more than anybody should go through!
After seeing the damage diabetes did to his mother, the author of Sayonara Diabetes,
Adam Newhouse - a long-term resident of Japan - realized that the real challenge
was in understanding the true causes of the disease. The author's interest in
Japanese healing arts became useful at this point. Together with his mother, he
did enormous research in search of better answers. "Understand Your Healing"
became their motto. A breakthrough soon followed. Searching for the secrets
of Japanese healing methods, they discovered a way to eliminate diabetic symptoms.
Within 8 months of starting the program, which included a macrobiotic diet, a
series of physical and breathing exercises, positive thinking and assimilation
of philosophies of health, the author's mother's blood sugar level returned to
a healthy level, allowing her to put aside her insulin. She lost 44 pounds. The
resulting book Sayonara Diabetes, The Three Samurai Health Maintenance System
explains, step by step, how they achieved their success.
Adam has offered
to share with us at The Macrobiotic Guide a helpful summary of the information
contained in their E-book
to offer those of you or your loved ones suffering from Type 2 Diabetes real hope
in overcoming it.
Discovery of Macrobiotics
I
developed my interest in macrobiotics when I had to take care of my mother after
my father's death. Until then I never realized how much she was suffering from
her Type 2 diabetes. Each of her days during the previous 14 years had been regimented
by 4 painful shots of insulin. Although I tried to encourage her to take steps
to improve her condition, she was too far advanced in her belief in modern drugs
and medicine. She also held fast to the current negative interpretation of the
disease. As she could no longer help herself, I began earnestly to search for
ways to better her condition. I simply could not understand what my mother was
telling me about the so-called incurable diseases. One reason for that was that
by then I had been separated from my mother for more than 20 years, and my way
of thinking seemed to evolve quite differently. In a word, I do not believe in
impossible things.
Then, after intensive research, I discovered that macrobiotics,
as advocated by George Ohsawa, offered a perfect solution. My mother would either
adopt a strict dietary regimen based on brown rice, miso and cooked vegetables
or continue in her misery. If she did give macrobiotics a chance and if Ohsawa's
promise held true, the new diet would rebalance her entire body and an entirely
new consciousness and way of thinking would set in. Reluctantly my mother agreed
to give macrobiotics a try, and indeed her condition began to improve very quickly.
In
my macrobiotic research, I read probably all of the books published by George
Ohsawa, Michio Kushi and Herman Aihara. The expanse of macrobiotic knowledge is
overwhelming and I am nothing but a beginner. There is so much to learn that I
would like to study all the time. I have noted my observations on my mother's
approach to dealing with diabetes in the e-book Sayonara Diabetes.
The
True Causes of Diabetes
Sayonara Diabetes is about how to control symptoms
of Type 2 diabetes, as successfully done by my mother. The book identifies a "diabetic
mindset" as the true cause responsible for the outbreak of the disease in
case of my mother. We called this mindset the Rich-but-Poor-Syndrome, or RBPS.
Emphasizing that our bodies reflect what and how we think, the book teaches that
a healthy non-diabetic mind holds the keys to a symptom-free life.
Sayonara
Diabetes then follows up on the causes of the disease by describing a comprehensive
healing system my mother followed to transform her diabetic consciousness and
to enjoy healthy diabetes-free thoughts and emotions. As a result, she regained
a healthy mind and body and reclaimed the lost virtues of self-responsibility,
courage, optimism and laughter. Blueprint for Eliminating the Symptoms
of Diabetes
Sayonara
Diabetes introduces a three-fold system my mother successfully applied to
a)
regain a healthy blood sugar level, b) put aside her insulin, c) lose 44
lbs. of her weight, and d) regain health consciousness - all of this in only
8 months!
Based the theme of balance, harmony and connection, this system involved: 1.
Eating a healthy macrobiotic diet balanced according to the principles of Yin
and Yang, and Acids and Alkali; 2. Cultivating a healthy, positive
and balanced mind and relationships (which included reading macrobiotic and other
holistic medicine books, as well as other books conveying positive messages);
and 3. Exercising, including doing meridian (or energy channel) stretches;
breathing and relaxation exercises, including the groundbreaking method of breathing
from our feet; and Zazen meditation. Philosophy of Health Recovery System Sayonara
Diabetes Philosophy of Health Recovery is based on 2 crowning principles: The
Principle of Balance and the Principle of Connection. In short, we achieve health
if we find and maintain a good balance of energies within ourselves and a strong
and consistent connection with other people and our surroundings.
The
Principles of Balance and Connection embodied in the system have 5 embodiments: 1.
First, balancing of what comes in and out of our minds with the aim of achieving
our mental recovery; 2. Second, balancing of our bodies with a goal
to achieve a healthy balance of energies in every cell of our body; 3.
Third, unifying of our minds and bodies, resulting in a state of mind where an
achievement of any desire becomes possible; 4. Forth, balancing, harmonizing
with, and finding connection with other people; and 5. Fifth, balancing
our lives with our environment and surroundings in order to reconnect with Nature.
Health
Maintenance System Based
on the success of our method to control diabetes, together with my mother, we
developed a three-fold system designed for the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle.
Central to this system is.
1. a carefully balanced diet, 2.
a pure, positive and creative mind and 3. an active lifestyle, which
includes work and physical and breathing exercises.
Each of the three components
is vital to maintain good health. Fortunately, each component is a mere reflection
of the others. The e-book
describes the whole system in its final part.
Questions
& Answers What
are the symptoms of diabetes? Adam: Diabetes is a sustained
energetic imbalance within our mind and body manifesting itself: a) on the mental
and emotional level, by the diabetic mentality and the emotional responses making
up the Rich-but-Poor Syndrome ("RBPS"), and b) on the physical level,
initially, by the malfunction of the body's natural ability to digest and assimilate
sugars as well as other endocrinal disorders, and progressively spreading to other
parts of our body (these symptoms may include inordinate and excessive thirst
and appetite; loss of weight due to the inability of the body to reach the supply
lines of glucose - the physical fuel for the body; frequent urination and sugar
in urine; frequent sense of fatigue, drowsiness, lethargy and heavy breathing;
stupor or unconsciousness; blurred vision or sudden vision changes; infections
of the gums or urinary tract; tingling sensation in hands and feet; itching of
the skin and genitals; and difficulties in healing of the skin, wounds or sores).
Who gets diabetes and what causes it?
Adam: Diabetes can be
looked at as a sickness of the mind, which then works its way - primarily through
thinking - onto the body (the mind moves first and the body follows). If our diabetic
thoughts repeated over and over tend to manifest themselves in a diabetic condition
of our bodies, the question then boils down to "what makes our thoughts diabetic?"
While everything may affect our thinking (for example, we tend to can have the
most profound impact on how and what we think. If we ate and drank too much Yin
food and drinks over a period of time, we would then have a good chance of inducing
diabetic symptoms.
How are our bad eating habits related to diabetes?
Adam: Our eating habits directly affect our thinking. Depending
on the balance of the food we eat, we will be attuned or will attract different
thoughts. That is why people who eat the same food (e.g., in families eating together),
often understand each other without words, being able to read each other's thoughts
intuitively. If we eat a well-balanced diet, then our minds and bodies will be
well-balanced and full of health. On the other hand, a Yin-heavy diet may trigger
a diabetic thought pattern over a period of time, which in turn may trigger diabetic
symptoms in our bodies.
The quickest way to modify our thinking and eliminate
physical symptoms of diabetes with almost no side effects is by macrobiotic balancing
of our diet. This includes a Yin and Yang as well as Alkali/Acid balancing. Such
a diet will produce a good overall balance of energies in every cell of our bodies,
allowing us to receive or formulate balanced thoughts and eventually regain health
consciousness. What are the Diabetes myths people have? 1.
That the disease is not curable, that it is a burden or cross we must patiently
carry for the rest of our lives. 2. That diabetes is genetic. 3.
That the real causes of diabetes are yet unknown or that the causes exist outside
of us. 4. Similarly, that the cure can be found outside of us. 5.
That the stories of recoveries are at best stories of miracles with no relevance
to our own lives. 6. That our diet has little to do with increasing
the risk of getting diabetes. 7. That there is not much we can do to
improve our health condition after diagnosis - at least nothing until "they"
come up with the real "cure." 8. That nobody as yet has been
cured of diabetes. 9. That injected insulin has little or no detrimental
side effects. 10. That physical exercise has little effect on diabetic
symptoms.

Newhouse, a graduate of Loyola University of Chicago, Cornell University and
New York University, is an avid student of oriental medicine and foreign cultures.
He has lived in Japan for 10 years, after leaving his favorite city, San Francisco.
He had already been introduced to the healing arts and philosophies of the Orient
before he took upon himself the responsibility of his ailing mother, a Type 2
diabetic suffering also from a host of related complications. With
a 33-year study of the Japanese martial arts, including Judo, Aikido, Kendo and
Karate, supplemented by classes and seminars on the healing powers of Ki energy,
yoga, zazen and breathing techniques, Adam Newhouse was in a unique position to
see what others could not how to help his diabetic mother eliminate and
control symptoms of her disease. Gradually, the reach of his interests expanded
to include acupuncture, shiatsu and meridian stretches, oriental breathing techniques,
and the healing energy of color, words and music. Adam Newhouse is a charter
member of the Tokyo Diabetes Club, a support group for persons with diabetes in
Tokyo. His current research is wide-ranging, and includes the healing aspects
of herbs and the contrasting treatment of diabetes by different ethnic groups
and traditions and the effect of aerobics on diabetes. Sayonara Diabetes by
